Deadly Single-Vehicle Rollover Crash on Highway 99 in Merced County
A man from Michigan died on Thursday afternoon following a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 99 in Merced.
The man was a passenger in the vehicle that rolled after the driver lost control and ran into the center median several times.
California Highway Patrol officers responded at approximately 2 p.m., to reports of a single-vehicle crash. Peter Manston, a 67-year-old Sacramento resident, was driving northbound on Hwy 99 south of the Childs Ave exit.
His 1990 Toyota Tacoma suddenly veered to the right and into the center median.
In a statement to officers, Manston said he then attempted to move the vehicle back onto the roadway but swerved to avoid hitting a car in the right lane. This sent the truck into the median a second time where the truck then flipped several times and came to rest on its passenger side.
The passenger, a man from Michigan, also 67, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He died at the scene. Manston was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center and treated for minor head injuries.
CHP investigators closed the left lane of Hwy 99 while they looked into the cause of the crash.
