2 Killed on the Bay Area Bridge After Big Rig Accident

San Francisco, CA (March 16, 2023) — Two people are dead after an accident on the Bay Bridge between an 18-wheeler and a car this Wednesday. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on the upper deck of Interstate 80 going westbound around 11:00 PM, just east of Treasure Island.

According to authorities, police were working on another unrelated accident on the bridge at the time. Just eight minutes later, a car rear-ended a big rig close to the on-ramp to Treasure Island Road. So far, police haven’t been able to determine the cause of the accident and have not identified the victims. However, authorities have taken one person into custody.

The crash caused CHP to shut down all lines on Wednesday. The highway has since reopened, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Rights of the Families of Victims

When people lose their lives in bridge car accidents like this, it ripples throughout families and communities. There are far more people affected by the tragedy than one might think. Oftentimes, families lose a mother, father, son, or daughter, causing long-term emotional strife. In this scenario, it’s important for grieving families to know what their legal options are, especially if the negligence of another person caused their loved one’s death.

Damages Families May Seek

While no amount of money can replace a life, families deserve some sort of recompense for such a devastating loss. In California, there are several damages families can claim for the loss of their loved one, including:

  • Medical expenses for treatment before death,
  • Funeral and burial costs,
  • Loss of financial support,
  • Loss of consortium,
  • Loss of companionship and guidance, and
  • Mental anguish.

Since every case is unique and since many of the losses experienced by surviving family members are long-term, we recommend reaching out to an attorney.
