Two Killed, Several Others Injured in Devastating Riverside County Crash After Drivers Makes an Illegal Pass
BEAUMONT, CA (September 9, 2010) - According to reporting from ABC 7 Eyewitness News, two people were killed and at least five others were injured in a major crash on California State Route 60. Three vehicles were involved in the wreck, including a Corvette, an SUV, and a large truck.
A representative for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) told reporters that law enforcement officials believe that the cause of the accident was a driver (operating the Corvette) attempting to use a closed-off lane to make an illegal pass.
The Corvette allegedly used a construction lane to try to pass the large truck, clipping it in the process — from there, the car then hit a guardrail and smashed into the SUV.
Tragically, the unidentified driver and an unidentified passenger inside the SUV were killed in the crash. Two more passengers within the SUV also sustained severe injuries.
The driver of the Corvette — a 55-year-old man named Mitchell Finesod from Cathedral City, California — was arrested at the scene of the accident. Officers from the CHP stated that Mr. Finesod will face serious criminal charges. The crash remains under investigation.
Aggressive driving, which includes using blocked off lanes and the shoulder of the road to make illegal passes, is one of the leading causes of serious highway accidents in California. Indeed, the Insurance Information Institute (III) reports that aggressive driving is a factor in more than 50 percent of fatal collisions in the United States.
