Pedestrian Killed In Crash, Second Newhall Fatality in 3 Days
Santa Clarita (March 4, 2019) - An early Sunday evening crash left a man dead after he was struck by a car on Railroad Avenue in Newhall. This comes after a cyclist died a few days earlier in a crash only blocks away.
Around 6:15 pm, responders converged at the intersection of Railroad and Lyons Avenues to investigate reports of the incident. Police arrived to find the crash was fatal and took one person into custody, witnesses said.
The investigation closed Railroad Ave in both directions between Lyons and 11th Street. The cause of the accident is unknown, however, officers performed a field sobriety test at the scene. Drugs or alcohol are being investigated as a possible cause.
A later update to the article identified the victim as Cecilio Vasquez, age 61. His death was the result of blunt force trauma sustained in the accident. Investigators have also ruled out alcohol as a possible cause of the crash and released the detained driver following the field sobriety test. Officers continue to investigate other possible causes of the tragic accident.
