Man Suspected of 3rd DUI Kills One in Highway 101 Crash
SONOMA COUNTY, CA (March 21, 2019) - One person was fatally wounded in a rollover crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Rosa late Wednesday night.
Police arrested the driver who caused the accident on suspicion of DUI. This was not his first alcohol-related driving offense.
California Highway patrol dispatched officers around 10:59 p.m. to Highway 101 south of River Road. Officers found a blue Honda Civic overturned off the right shoulder of the road. A silver Ford Fusion was blocking the right lane of traffic.
CHP investigators believe the driver of the Ford was traveling southbound on 101 when he approached the Honda which was driving at a much slower speed. The Ford then rear-ended the Honda and pushed it off the road. The car proceeded to hit the guardrail and then rolled and collided with a fence and a tree. Responders pronounced the driver of the Honda dead at the scene.
Fernando Aguilera, 31, of Santa Rosa was arrested at the scene, charged under suspicion of DUI. Aguilera has been convicted of DUI two times before. The man is being held in Sonoma County jail, charged with suspicion of homicide, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony DUI and felony DUI above the legal limit.
