2 people killed in Madera head on collision

MADERA, CA (April 13, 2019) – The 17-year-old driver of one car and the 11-year-old passenger of another were killed in a head-on collision on Saturday.

Investigators believe the accident happened because the older driver drifted into the oncoming lane, though they are unsure why. The identities of the victims have not been released.

The accident occurred on Avenue 12, a two-lane road neighbors say has a dangerous reputation. Nicholas Brenner, who lives near Avenue 12, told ABC30 that people travel at high speeds along the road. “Very aggressive, you’re never going fast enough,” he said.

Brenner also said that distracted driving is a big problem along Avenue 12. He said he often sees people on their cell phones as they drive, which is especially hazardous they try to pass one another.

"Driving it all day I see people on their phones all day swerving left and right, everybody wants to pass," Brenner said. "I've seen some close calls when people try to pass."

Both a memorial and a GoFundMe were set up for the 17-year-old victim. ABC30 reported that the memorial had visitors throughout the day.
