1 Killed and 7 Injured After Police Chase Ends in Multi-Vehicle Crash in Long Beach

Long Beach, CA (March 29, 2023) — One person is dead and several others are injured after a car involved in a police chase caused a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday night. The chase started at around 8:00 PM when a Seal Beach officer stopped a 2006 Lexus sedan for a Vehicle Code violation.

According to authorities, the car was occupied by a female driver, a 39-year-old male passenger, and an infant. When the officer began speaking to the driver, the male passenger got into the driver’s seat and sped away, fleeing northbound on Pacific Coast Highway. After five minutes of police pursuit, the Lexus crashed near Second Street, causing a multi-vehicle accident involving eight other vehicles.

After the collision, the man driving the Lexus, identified as Chaz Lamar Long, fled on foot. He was taken into custody shortly after leaving the scene. It was found that he had an outstanding federal warrant for weapons violations.

In total, seven people were injured in the accident and one person died. The accident was so destructive that the Long Beach Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extract some victims from the wreck. The current conditions of these victims are unknown.
